How Inflation can break your retirement

How does this affect your retirement?
Let's look at some numbers to help bring out the effect.

Current Age Retirement Age Current Mthly Exp Assumed Inflation Rate (pre and post retirement) Expected Return Post Retirement Life Expectancy Retirement Corpus required (approx)
30 60 Rs. 50,000 8% p.a. 8% p.a. 85 years Rs. 15.09 cr
35 60 Rs. 50,000 8% p.a. 8% p.a. 85 years Rs. 10.27 cr
40 60 Rs. 50,000 8% p.a. 8% p.a. 85 years Rs. 6.99 cr
45 60 Rs. 50,000 8% p.a. 8% p.a. 85 years Rs. 4.76 cr

If you look at the table above, you'll notice a few things:
Firstly, all assumptions have been kept constant, the only change is the current age. So basically this situation applies to somebody who wants to retire at 60, currently spends Rs. 50,000 per month, has a life expectancy of 85 years, will put his investments into safe fixed income instruments earning 8% per annum post retirement (post tax). This person might be 30, 35, 40 or 45 years old.

Secondly, you'll notice that the inflation rate post retirement is 8%, and so is the investment return rate post retirement. This means that any investments made will generate the same rate of return as the rate of wealth erosion due to inflation. So the real value of your investments will remain the same.

Thirdly, you'll notice that for a 30 year old spending Rs. 50,000 a month, who wants to retire at 60, the retirement corpus required is Rs. 15.09 crores approximately.

With all the same assumptions, a 45 year old has to accumulate Rs. only 4.76 crores by the age of 60 a comparatively much smaller corpus.

Why is this? The answer is simple.

A 30 year old has 30 years to go before he retires. His pre retirement expenses inflate continuously for 30 years. By the time he retires, his Rs. 50,000 monthly expenses will cost him more than Rs. 5 lakhs per month. That's a 10 fold increase, just to maintain his standard of living.

The 45 year old does not face this level of inflation. To maintain his standard of living at the age of 60, he has to shell out Rs. 1.58 lakhs per month only a 3 fold increase.

And that's what inflation can do to your retirement. The good news is that with the right kind of disciplined financial planning, both goals are achievable. But as with all successfully achieved tasks, the first step is often the hardest.

Use our Retirement Calculator to see what Your retirement number is and then call an unbiased expert financial planner to help you achieve this goal and all your other life goals.

Valmont Upped to Outperform - Analyst Blog

Hot Restaurant Stocks To Watch For 2015

On Jul 11, we upgraded steel pipe and tube company Valmont Industries, Inc. (VMI) to Outperform. Our view reflects strong demand environment across utility and irrigation markets.

Why the Upgrade?

Valmont had a strong first-quarter 2013 (reported on Apr 18) with both revenues and earnings topping Zacks Consensus Estimates. Revenues rose by double digits, buoyed by healthy gains across the company's Utility Support Structures and Irrigation segments and contributions of acquisitions.

Following the release of the first quarter results, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2013 for Valmont went up 3.55% to $10.80 per share. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2014 has also moved up 1.43% to $11.35. With Zacks Consensus Estimates for both 2013 and 2014 moving up, the company now has a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

Valmont's strong presence in emerging markets should enable it to deliver incremental earnings in 2013. Its Irrigation and Coatings segments are witnessing strong momentum.

In the Irrigation segment, improving North American equipment demand amid the ongoing drought conditions and higher farm income is boosting sales and profitability.

Valmont is also poised to savor incremental opportunity in the utility market. The global transmission and distribution markets are seen as major long-term growth opportunities. Moreover, its Coatings segment is benefiting from moderating zinc prices and declining energy costs.

Valmont is actively pursuing capacity expansion through new constructions and extension of existing facilities to meet the increasing demand from utility customers in North America. We are also encouraged by its commitment to boost shareholder returns through higher dividend payouts.

Other Stocks to Consider

Other companies in the steel industry with favorable Zacks Rank are Kobe Steel Ltd. (KBS! TY), Shiloh Industries Inc. (SHLO) and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMY). All of them hold a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Josh Zachariah]

Tesco (TSCDY) has been selling well short of the price Warren Buffett paid last year. In November he paid some $18 a share and it now sells for less than $15 (a P/E less than 9). The remarkable thing is how unchanged the business is despite the sell-off. What catalyzed the sharp drop in price was comments by the CEO that earnings growth would be muted for 2012. But what Ive discovered, as Warren Buffett certainly has, is that the company is an exceptional business selling at a very attractive price.

Nigeria's reformed banking system has provided many foreigners with an attractive means to invest in the fast-growing domestic economy. The banking industry is important, not only because of the rise of microfinance, but because of the move by banks into consumer banking. Until recently, banks were mainly financing large businesses or the government through bond purchases. Following a banking crisis in 2008, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) conducted an audit of the commercial banking sector. All banks that failed the audit had their CEOs replaced. The state-owned Asset Management Corporation (AMCON) was created to purchase non-performing loans and recapitalize the unhealthy banks. A recent review of the country's banks by the IMF showed a dramatic increase in profits for the industry in 2012, while the capital adequacy ratio was above the minimum requirement of 10% and non-performing loans were below the mandated threshold of 5%5.

Insurance Products

The Insurance Products segment offers a range of protection products and services aimed at s! erving the financ ial needs of its customers throughout their lives. These pro! ducts are sold to individuals and corporations, as well as other institutions and their respective employees. It is organized in three businesses: Group Life, Individual Life and Non-Medical Health.

The Group Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, and term life products. It offer group insurance products as employer-paid benefits or as voluntary benefits where all or a portion of the premiums are paid by the employee. These group products and services also include employee paid supplemental life and are offered as standard products or may be tailored to meet specific customer needs.

The Individual Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, term life and whole life products. Additionally, through its broker-dealer affiliates, it offers a full range of mutual funds and other securities products. The products within both Group Life and Individual Life include Variable Life, Universa l Life, Term Life and Whole Life. Variable life products provide insurance coverage through a contract that gives the policyholder the policyholder flexibility in investment choices and, depending on the product, in premium payments and coverage amounts, with certain guarantees. With variable life products, premiums and account balances can be directed by the policyholder into a variety of separate account investment options or directed to the Companys general account. In the separate account investment options, the policyholder bears the entire risk of the investment results.

Universal life products provide insurance coverage on the same basis as variable life, except that premiums, and the resulting accumulated balances, are allocated only to the Companys general account. Universal life products may allow the insured to increase or decrease the amount of death benefit coverage over the term of the contract and the owner to adjust the fr! equency a! nd amount of premium payments.

Term life products provid! e a guara! nteed benefit upon the death of the insured for a specified time period in return for the periodic payment of premiums. Specified coverage periods range from one year to 30 years, but in no event are they longer than the period over, which premiums are paid. Death benefits may be level over the period or decreasing. Decreasing coverage is used principally to provide for loan repayment in the event of death. Premiums may be guaranteed at a level amount for the coverage period or may be non-level and non-guaranteed. Term insurance products are sometimes referred to as pure protection products, in that there are typically no savings or investment elements. Term contracts expire without value at the end of the coverage period when the insured party is still living.

Whole life products provide a guaranteed benefit upon the death of the insured in return for the periodic payment of a fixed premium over a predetermined period. Premium payments may be required for the e ntire life of the contract period, to a specified age or period, and may be level or change in accordance with a predetermined schedule. Whole life insurance includes policies that provide a participation feature in the form of dividends. Policyholders may receive dividends in cash or apply them to increase death benefits, increase cash values available upon surrender or reduce the premiums required to maintain the contract in-force.

The Non-Medical Health products and services include dental insurance, group short- and long-term disability, individual disability income, long-term care (LTC), critical illness and accidental death & dismemberment coverage. Other products and services include employer-sponsored auto and homeowners insurance provided through the Auto & Home segment and prepaid legal plans. The Company also sells administrative services-only (ASO) arrangements to some employers. The products in this area are Dental, Disab! ility and! Long-term Care (LT C). Dental products provide insurance and ASO plans that ass! ist emplo! yees, retirees and their families in maintaining oral health while reducing out-of-pocket expenses and providing superior customer service. Dental plans include the Preferred Dentist Program and the Dental Health Maintenance Organization. Disability products provide a benefit in the event of the disability of the insured. This benefit is in the form of monthly income paid until the insured reaches age 65. In addition to income replacement, the product may be used to provide for the payment of business overhead expenses for disabled business owners or mortgage payment protection. This is offered on both a group and individual basis. LTC products provide protection against the potentially high costs of LTC services. They generally pay benefits to insureds that need assistance with activities of daily living or have a cognitive impairment.

Retirement Products

The Retirement products segment includes a variety of variable and fixed annuities that are primarily sold to individuals and employees of corporations and other institutions. The products in this area are Variable Annuities and Fixed Annuities. Variable annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Variable annuities allow the contract holder to make deposits into various investment options in a separate account, as determined by the contract holder. The risks associated with such investment options are borne entirely by the contract holder, except where guaranteed minimum benefits are involved.

Fixed annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Fixed annuities do not allow the same investment flexibility provided by variable annuities, but provide guarantees related to the preservation of principal and interest credited.

Corporate Benefit Funding

The Corporate Benefit Funding segment includes a range of annuity and investment ! products,! including, guaranteed intere st products and other stable value products, income annuitie! s, and se! parate account contracts for the investment management of defined benefit and defined contribution plan assets. Under the Capital Markets Investment Products, the products offered include funding agreements, Federal Home Loan Bank advances and funding agreement-backed commercial paper. Under the Other Corporate Benefit Funding Products and Services, it offers specialized insurance products designed specifically to provide solutions for non-qualified benefit and retiree benefit funding purposes.

Homeowners and other insurance represented 33% of Auto & Homes total net earned premiums in 2011. The products in this area are Auto Coverages and Homeowners and Other Coverages. Could this be the real deal this time? There's no denying that InvenSense has pretty solid technology, particularly as Samsung -- which typically uses the best components it can find -- has so extensively used InvenSense's products. That said, the iPhone 5s used the following MEMS components:

Three-axis accelerometer from Bosch Sensortech Three-axis gyroscope from STMicroelectronics (STM) Three-axis electronic compass from AKM

For InvenSense to displace Bosch (which managed to wrestle away the accelerometer socket from STMicroelectronics) and/or STMicroelectronics over at Apple, it is going to have to present a pretty compelling value proposition. Whether it can do so only the tear-downs will tel! l, but it is surprising -- particularly given how compelling InvenSense's products seem to be -- that the company hasn't won an iPhone socket to date.

Weatherford International (NYSE: WFT  ) is going through an identity crisis of sorts that I'm surprised hasn't raised some legal red flags or caused more concern on Wall Street. The company maintains its main operational office in Houston, was formerly legally based in Bermuda, moved to Switzerland in 2009, and now seeks the greener pastures of Ireland to operate at lower costs and further attract top talent. What's going on here? Is Weatherford gaming the system, oris itpossibly hiding something? One thing's for sure, this is perfectly legal but something sure doesn't smell right since tax shelters are increasingly being vilified in political circles here in theUnited States. Ireland has also been under pressure to makeits tax structures harder to abuse by multinational corporations.

Hot Oil Service Companies To Watch In Right Now

It's no secret that capital spending budgets are falling at oil companies across the globe, but that's not the case for this company, writes MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, who points out the efficiency measures and new technology products responsible for much of its success.

Everyone knows that capital spending budgets at the world's oil companies are falling.

But it just doesn't seem to matter for Schlumberger (SLB). Schlumberger is a member of my Jubak's Picks portfolio.

On January 17, the oil services and technology company reported fourth quarter earnings of $1.35 a share, beating Wall Street estimates by two cents a share. Earnings grew by 29.8% year over year.

Revenue climbed 7.4% year over year to $11.91 billion. That was slightly below the $11.98 projected by Wall Street.

I think you can tell what's going on at Schlumberger simply by taking a glance at those earnings and revenue growth rates. Revenue growth is indeed sluggish in the oil field. But Schlumberger's margins are climbing, thanks to efficiencies at the company and, especially, thanks to its years of investment in oil field technologies.

5 Best Construction Stocks For 2014

Wal-Mart's (NYSE: WMT  ) plans for expansion in Washington, D.C., took a hit yesterday.

The world's largest retailer abandoned its proposal to open three stores and is weighing its options for three other sites that are currently in construction after the D.C. City Council passed the Large Retailer Accountability Act of 2013 last night.

Under the new act, any chain with at least $1 billion in sales and stores greater than 75,000 square feet must pay 50% more than the minimum wage for D.C. locations.

Wal-Mart was the target all along. Unionized businesses are exempted from the new requirement, and non-unionized chains that already have a presence in D.C. -- including Macy's (NYSE: M  ) and Wal-Mart rival Target (NYSE: TGT  ) -- have four years to comply.

Asking Wal-Mart to shell out at least $12.50 an hour while the competition can get away with the minimum of $8.25 an hour is controversial. Your political bent probably dictates how you feel about the measure.

There hasn been a January effect rally in shares of Ply Gem (PGEM). In fact, it has been quite the opposite. Shares are down a whopping 25% during the month. For a stock I rated as on of the Top 10 Sizzling Stocks, such a move is painful, but not disastrous. Sizzling Stocks are meant to be held for the duration of the year and we have 11 months to go. Small-cap stocks like Ply Gem can move sharply one direction or the other.
