10 Best Gas Stocks To Watch For 2014

Natural gas vehicles, or NGVs, hold tremendous promise for both the U.S. and the world's future. Not only is natural gas significantly cheaper than oil on an energy-equivalent basis right now, vehicles running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) or compressed natural gas (CNG) release about 25% less carbon dioxide on average than their gasoline and diesel-powered counterparts.

While the nation as a whole seems energetic about the concept of using alternative fuels to power their vehicles, one state is expected to be a clear standout in facilitating the shift toward NGVs over the next year and a half Texas.

Texas to lead the way in NGV fueling stations
According to Lynn Lyons, a spokeswoman for the Texas Clean Transportation project, the Lone Star State leads the way in the number of proposed fueling stations for natural gas vehicles. Over the next six to 18 months, the number of refueling stations in Texas supplying LNG, CNG, or both is projected to double, from a little over 60 currently to more than 120.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

The speed at which the Whiting deal closed is also important to note, especially when considering LINN Energy's complex, and drama-filled deal to acquireBerry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY  ) . Because that deal is a first of its kind, including using shares of affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) as the currency, the deal has taken the company much longer to close than expected. Also, it has faced a barrage of short-seller accusations which has now brought the attention of the SEC. So, while short-sellers call BreitBurn "LINN Energy Junior" that is simply not the case and this deal proves that these companies do operate very differently.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

As I write this units of LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) are heading lower while shares of affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) are following suit. The culprit is an article in Barron's on the company that is highlighting comments from a recent presentation by a hedge fund that's short the company. The article, "Twilight of a Stock-Market Darling", is one of the many recent publications on the company that have highlighted some areas of concern. Let's dig into the thesis of the recent concerns and see if we can glean some insight into what's going on.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  )
Investors in LINN energy are no strangers to the role acquisitions play in giving the company the ability to raise its distribution. Along with its announced acquisition of Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY  ) in conjunction with its affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) earlier this year, LINN announced a sizable boost to its distribution. While I wouldn't expect to see any mention of another dividend increase this quarter, what we might see is confirmation that the company is switching to a monthly distribution.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Investors in LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) have been rattled lately as bears have been bashing the company's units. To top it off, those units were hit again last week as rumors began to surface that the complex deal with its affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) to buyBerry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY  ) was being delayed. The big concern is that the deal might fall apart, which would be a major blow to the company.

Brean Capital reported on Friday that it has upgraded natural gas utility company WGL Holdings Inc (WGL).

The firm has raised its rating on WGL from “Hold” to “Buy,” and has given the company a $46 price target. This price target suggests a 12% increase from the stock’s current price of $40.62. The upgrade was primarily based on valuation and future investment opportunities.

“Like many utilities in the gas LDC space, the shares of WGL Holdings have come off recent highs and are now trading at a level we consider attractive,” analyst Michael Gaugler comments. “Beyond valuation, we consider the recent announcement of conditional approval of Dominion’s Cove Point facility for LNG export as a positive development in terms of future investment opportunities, given the company’s one-third interest in the Commonwealth Pipeline project, which we believe will be revisited due to future increased demand.”

WGL Holdings shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Friday. The stock has been mostly flat YTD.
