Top 5 Railroad Stocks To Own For 2014

Someone who reads my articles sent me this question:

Geoff,

I think most of your readers understand that every business is unique and therefore requires varying valuation techniques. However, I think that we could benefit from some advice from you on how to recognize what techniques are appropriate for which general type of businessFor example, net-nets are easy in its most simplified form you could ask yourself, re the current assets (or some discounted version of them) greater than the total liabilities? If the answer is yes, you know this is a net-net and should be valued as such.

But what questions would you ask to realize that a certain company is best valued on a price/book value? Maybe something like, oes the company have a strong intangible brands?would clue you in that book value is not the right way to look at it? Or, oes the current book value represent reality?might help you with asset-heavy companies like railroads where P/B might be misleading? Or why would you decide that book value is the most appropriate metric?

Advisors' Opinion:

Avoid companies with weaker balance sheets, including Sell-rated [Arch Coal (ACI)].

Peabody has gained 3.7% to $20.81, Walter has risen 7% to $18.57, Alpha Natural has advanced 4.3% to $7.99, SunCoke is up 3.3% at $21.24, and even Arch Coal is surging: It’s gained 6.4% to $4.48.

    Dollars for bills
For the full-year 2012, the coal lobby had these big spenders to thank:

Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) $5.5 million CONSOL Energy (NYSE: CNX  ) $3.9 million Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE: ANR  ) $2.6 million Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI  ) $1.8 million Patriot Coal (NASDAQOTH: PCXCQ  ) $1.1 million

Compared to the lobbying dollars its fossil fuel cousin big oil is spending, these numbers aren't that high. Given that the industry is in dire straits Patriot Coal has already gone bankrupt one would almost expect the numbers to be higher. But perhaps without these lobbying efforts, things would be far worse for coal. The coal lobby has risen steadily after a big uptick between 2004 and 2005, so let's see what issues are garnering the most cash these days.

    This week's winner
Topping the list this week was the portfolios worst performer up until now, Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI  ) , which logged a 6.2% gain despite continued negativity surrounding coal. One factor still working in coal's favor is that it still accounts for better than 40% of all electricity generation in the U.S. It isn't a fuel source that's going to disappear overnight no matter how popular alternative energy is becoming. As long as Arch continues to focus on improving its exports business, I feel it has the tools necessary to cut costs and wait for prices to improve.

Fair Value: In calculating fair value, I consider the NPV MMA Differential Fair Value along with these four calculations of fair value, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Avg. High Yield Price
    2. 20-Year DCF Price
    3. Avg. P/E Price
    4. Graham Number

CTBI is trading at a premium to all four valuations above. The stock is trading at a 53.5% premium to its calculated fair value of $29.43. CTBI did not earn any Stars in this section.

Dividend Analytical Data: In this section there are three possible Stars and three key metrics, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Free Cash Flow Payout
    2. Debt To Total Capital
    3. Key Metrics
    4. Dividend Growth Rate
    5. Years of Div. Growth
    6. Rolling 4-yr Div. > 15%

CTBI earned one Star in this section for 1.) above. A Star was earned since the Free Cash Flow payout ratio was less than 60% and there were no negative Free Cash Flows over the last 10 years. The company has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1988 and has increased its dividend payments for 33 consecutive years.

Dividend Income vs. MMA: Why would you assume the equity risk and invest in a dividend stock if you could earn a better return in a much less risky money market account (MMA) or Treasury bond? This section compares the earning ability of this stock with a high yield MMA. Two items are considered in this section, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. NPV MMA Diff.
    2. Years to > MMA

The negative NPV MMA Diff. means that on a NPV basis the dividend earnings from an investment in CTBI would be less than a similar amount invested in MMA earning a 20-year average rate of 3.41%. If CTBI grows its dividend at 1.5% per year, it will never equal a MMA yielding an estimated 20-year average rate of 3.41%.

Memberships and Peers: CTBI is, a member of the Broad Dividend Achieve

While it may be an overstatement to deem Intellicheck Mobilisa, Inc. (NYSEMKT:IDN) the most underappreciated and underestimated stock out there right now, there's no way of denying IDN is a name that most traders are missing the boat on. Consider this an impartial remedy to that wrong - Intellicheck Mobilisa looks to be on the verge of a strong bullish move, fueled by all the right reasons.

The key to making smart investment decisions on stocks reporting earnings is to anticipate how they'll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever inevitable surprises arise. That way, you'll be less likely to make an uninformed knee-jerk reaction to news that turns out to be exactly the wrong move.
